COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State keeps winning. Barely.
Jamar Butler scored 18 points and Greg Oden had 17 points and 14 rebounds to help the No. 2 Buckeyes beat Penn State for the second time in eight days, 68-60 on Wednesday night.
Daequan Cook added 12 points and Ron Lewis 11 for the Buckeyes (25-3, 13-1), who hold a one-game edge with two games left in the Big Ten race.
The win set the stage for a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown Sunday when top-ranked Wisconsin, still smarting from Tuesday night’s 64-55 loss at Michigan State, comes to town. The winner is assured of at least a share of the Big Ten title.
Ohio State has won 12 in a row overall, 24 in a row at home and 11 in a row in the Big Ten. The conference winning streak is the second-longest in school history, eclipsed only by the 27 in a row by the Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek teams of 1960-62.
Geary Claxton had 15 points, David Jackson 14 and Danny Morrissey 11 for the Nittany Lions (10-16, 1-12), who have lost their last 12 games. They are also 0-9 on the road and have lost 44 of their last 47 Big Ten road games.
No. 3 Florida 63, S. Carolina 49
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Gators are getting pretty good at these net-cutting ceremonies.
Al Horford scored 20 points, Chris Richard added a season-high 14 and third-ranked Florida rebounded from its first loss in more than two months with a 63-49 victory against South Carolina on Wednesday night.
The Gators, whose 17-game winning streak was snapped Saturday at Vanderbilt, clinched the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship – their second outright league title and first since 1989.
And the defending national champions got to cut down nets for the fourth time in the last year.
No. 12 Georgetown 75, Cincinnati 65
CINCINNATI – For a team on a double-digit winning streak, 12th-ranked Georgetown doesn’t sound so happy.
Jeff Green scored 21 points and had a tone-setting block Wednesday night, helping the Hoyas extend their winning streak to 10 games with a 75-65 victory over Cincinnati that didn’t meet their standards.
The Hoyas (21-5, 11-2 Big East) took control with a 13-point run late in the first half, and the league’s toughest defense held off its worst team. Cincinnati (10-17, 1-2) has dropped nine in a row, its longest losing streak in 23 years.
The latest win in the streak was perhaps the Hoyas’ least satisfying. They were outrebounded 31-27 by a much smaller team and kept it close with 16 turnovers.
No. 13 S. Illinois 58, Indiana St. 50
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Tony Young scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half to help No. 13 Southern Illinois beat Indiana State 58-50 on Wednesday night and win the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title outright.
Jamaal Tatum also scored 15 points for the Salukis (24-5, 14-3), who won their 10th straight.
Marico Stinson led Indiana State (12-16, 5-12) with 17 points, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Sycamores’ fifth straight loss.
Southern Illinois held Indiana State to 33 percent shooting in the second half.
Miss. St. 83, No. 17 Vanderbilt 70
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Jamont Gordon recorded his first career triple-double – and the second in school history – with 15 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists as Mississippi State snapped a 13-game losing streak against ranked opponents Wednesday night with an 83-70 win over No. 17 Vanderbilt.
The Bulldogs (16-10, 7-6) had the easiest night, simply running away from the Commodores (18-9, 8-5) by the end of the first half.
Charles Rhodes had 23 points, including five crowd-rousing dunks, Dietric Slater added 18 points for the Bulldogs and Reginald Delk had 13.
No. 20 Louisville 72, St. John’s 48
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Edgar Sosa spent the last three months trying not to celebrate every basket with a shimmy and a shake.
But after pirouetting around a St. John’s defender for a layup late in No. 20 Louisville’s 72-48 win Wednesday night, he just couldn’t help himself.
Sosa, a New York native, excitedly huffed and puffed his way back up the court, yapping at St. John’s guard Eugene Lawrence all the way.
Miami 68, No. 24 Virginia 60
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Jack McClinton scored 14 points, including two late 3-pointers to help Miami defeat No. 24 Virginia 68-60 Wednesday night.
McClinton’s 3-pointer with 1:06 left put Miami ahead for good 61-58.
After J.R. Reynolds converted on two free throws to reduce the Hurricanes’ lead to one with 52.1 seconds remaining, McClinton hit his second 3-pointer with 28.4 seconds to play.
Tennessee 69, No. 25 Alabama 66 OT
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Chris Lofton scored 20 points, JaJuan Smith added 16 and Tennessee rallied to beat No. 25 Alabama 69-66 in overtime Wednesday.
The Volunteers (19-9, 7-6 Southeastern Conference), still hoping to get an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, improved to 15-0 at home this season.
The Crimson Tide (19-8, 6-7) came back from nine points down in the second half and struggled with a season-high 26 turnovers.
Virginia Tech 79, Boston College 62
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Zabian Dowdell scored 23 points and Deron Washington had 19 as Virginia Tech moved back into the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title chase with a 79-62 victory against Boston College on Wednesday night.
The Hokies (19-8, 9-4) led 36-32 at halftime, scored the first 14 points of the second half and then all but ran the Eagles out of Cassell Coliseum. In the first 13 minutes of the half, the Hokies outscored Boston College 32-6, getting a couple of highlight reel dunks from Washington.
and a heads-up inbounds play from Dowdell.
