WASHINGTON – Joe Pavelski and Jonathan Cheechoo scored in the shootout to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.
Patrick Rismiller and Matthew Carle scored in regulation and Evgeni Nabokov stopped 24 shots as San Jose ended a three-game losing streak and beat Washington for the 10th straight time.
Shaone Morrisonn and Brian Sutherby scored for the Capitals, who have not beaten the Sharks since Feb. 20, 1999. Washington has dropped five straight overall.
Matt Pettinger scored in the shootout for Washington, but Nabakov denied Alex Ovechkin on a stick save in front and Alexander Semin on a move to the right post. Cheechoo then ended the shootout with a backhander past Brent Johnson at the left post.
Morrisonn and Sutherby tallied less than a minute apart midway through the opening period, as Washington scored on two of its first four shots.
After the Sharks stopped a 2-on-2 rush, Morrisonn scored on a one-timer from the left point, ending a 43-game goal drought at 9:52. When defenseman Kyle McLaren failed to Jamie Heward’s rebound in front of the crease 49 seconds later, Sutherby knocked in the loose puck for a 2-0 lead.
Rismiller converted Mike Grier’s right-wing pass, capping a 3-on-2 break with his fifth goal at 17:02.
Carle’s power-play goal with 14:11 remaining in the third period tied the score. Carle finished off a three-shot flurry by tapping in the puck as it rolled along the goal line at the right post.
Notes: The Capitals have played five overtime games in their last eight. … San Jose scratched C Patrick Marleau (food poisoning), but Pavelski returned after missing eight games with a foot injury. … Capitals C Kris Beech rejoined the lineup after nine consecutive games as a healthy scratch. … Ovechkin has scored one goal in nine games, the worst slump of his brief NHL career.
Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 2
DETROIT – Henrik Zetterberg scored the tiebreaking goal with 6:22 left to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night.
Detroit got its 13th consecutive home win, moving within one of the franchise record set in 1964-65.
Zetterberg added an empty-netter, and Pavel Datsyuk and Kris Draper also scored for the Red Wings. Dominik Hasek made 26 saves.
Radim Vrbata, and Bryan Smolinski scored for Chicago, and Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 31 shots
Datsyuk gave Detroit a 2-1 lead with short-handed goal 9:17 into the third period, just 8 seconds after Chris Chelios was called for a penalty.
ccidentally highsticking James Wisniewski. Datsyuk stole the puck from Adrian Aucoin at the Red Wings’ blue line, went in on a breakaway, and beat Khabibulin with a forehand shot after making a move for his 19th goal.
The lead didn’t last long, as Smolinski connected for a power-play goal 1:29 later on a slap shot from the right circle that deflected off Mathieu Schneider’s leg and past Hasek for Smolinski’s 13th goal.
