NEWRY – Keller Williams, a singer-songwriter who redefines the term “one-man band,” is set to perform at White Cap Lodge Saturday, March 3, as part of Sunday River’s Bud Light Concert Series.

Williams is known for using digital looping, or repeating samples of background music, to create the sound of an entire band all on his own. Looping is often used on studio tracks, but Williams has mastered the art of doing it while performing live. He uses looping in tandem with the legion of acoustic and electric guitars and various percussion instruments that surround him onstage. The result is a musical experience that ranges from bluegrass to techno to funk and back again – and it’s never the same twice.

Born and raised in Fredericksburg, Va., Williams got his first guitar at age 3. He played in cover bands and solo throughout high school and college. His break came when he approached members of the am band String Cheese Incident after one of the band’s shows. He volunteered to open for them for free, and they eventually took him up on the offer. In 1997, he went on tour with them, and started developing the performance he is known for today.

Williams tours actively on the jam band circuit, and has been accompanied by Umphrey’s McGee, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Michael Franti and Spearhead in recent years. His main influences include Leo Kottke, Ani DiFranco, Jerry Garcia, and Victor Wooten, who in particular inspired Williams’ use of live looping.
