LEWISTON – All parents of Lewiston public K-12 students are invited to a meeting Monday night to learn about safety on the Internet.

The meeting will be led by Randy Dehetre, technology integration teacher at the Lewiston Middle School.

“Many things on the Internet are dangerous. It’s sort of like being in a big city, there are places you go, places you don’t go,” Dehetre said. A big point is to educate parents about dangers such as online predators and ways to keep their children safe.

“Some students have more than 20 to 25 instant messaging buddy lists. Quite often they don’t know who they’re talking to,” Dehetre said.

Among the topics covered Monday night will be that computers should not be in bedrooms where parents can’t see what their child has on the screen, computers should always be in common rooms. “Know what your child is doing on the Internet,” Dehetre said.

Lewiston parents will also be told about an online educational search engine for Lewiston students being recommended by teachers. The search engine is netTrekker. It normally costs $10 a month, but because of a grant is being given free to all Lewiston students, Dehetre said. Every single source on netTrekker has been looked at by educators, Dehetre said. NetTrekker is not only free and safe, but is a recommended source for students’ homework and reports.

The parents’ meeting is being held at the Lewiston Middle School beginning at 6:30.
