CHESHIRE, Conn. (AP) – A 51-year-old man fatally shot his wife and adult stepdaughter before killing himself in their home Sunday afternoon, police said.
The bodies of Tadeusz Winiarski, his 49-year-old wife Urszula and her 29-year-old daughter Marzena Ladziejewska were discovered in separate rooms of the home, police said.
It was the second multiple murder and suicide in Connecticut in two days.
However, police said Sunday there was no known connection between the shootings and an incident late Saturday in which an 81-year-old man killed three people and himself in Enfield.
Cheshire police responded to the Winiarskis’ home shortly after noon Sunday when the couple’s children, ages 12 and 14, ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911 and report that shots had been fired, police said.
Officers who surrounded the house could see the two women’s bodies inside, but initially were unsure whether Tadeusz Winiarski had fled the scene or barricaded himself inside, Cheshire police Lt. Jay Markella said.
“It was immediately apparent that they were deceased,” Markella said of the women. “We didn’t know if we had a barricaded suspect who was armed, who may have fled or who was still inside.”
Officers blocked off neighborhood roads, issued a public warning about Winiarski and called in help from Meriden police and the Connecticut State Police.
They later discovered Tadeusz Winiarski’s body in another room of the house, and determined he had fatally shot himself, Markella said.
Information was not released Sunday night about whether he left a note or other indication of his motives.
