CANTON – Representatives from an association of firefighters from Franklin, Androscoggin and Oxford counties, presented the town with a certificate of appreciation for allowing training in condemned, flood-damaged houses.

On Thursday night, firefighter Lt. Robert Dixon of Rumford and state fire instructor Vicki Schmidt of Buckfield presented the certificate to the town.

Canton Fire Chief Wayne Dube said 1,500 hours of firefighter training had taken place in homes that were scheduled for demolition due to flood damage incurred in December 2003.

He said more than 100 firefighters took six different courses, including search and rescue, handling hoses, stream and foam use, positive pressure and ventilation, forcible entry and ladder instruction.

The association representatives said they were grateful for the town’s support of firefighter training.

In other town news, selectmen are seeking applicants for a road foreman, an appointed position.

Applications are available in the town office, as are absentee ballots.

Selectmen voted to set March 10 as the deadline for all residents to pick up a dump sticker at the town office.

No one may use the dump after this date without a sticker.
