RUMFORD – Lorraine A. Hammond, 83, died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 26, at her home. She was a resident of Route 232 in Rumford.

Born in Winona, Minn., on Sept. 22, 1923, she was a daughter of Jacob and Minnie (Jarcho) Davis.

She was a graduate of Winona High School, and a Seaman First Class for the U.S. Navy. For several years, she worked for Betty Crocker as a home tester.

She was married in Baltimore, Md., on Nov. 10, 1945, to the late Newton Hammond, who died in 1991.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Hammond of Rumford Corner; a son, Tom Hammond of Rumford Corner; three sisters, Evelyn Shiel, Ada Kittle, and Lois Prigge, all of Winona, Minn.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Marilyn Lein, and Vera Wychgram; and a brother, Lynn Davis.
