FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) – Daisuke Matsuzaka and his Red Sox teammates participated in a brief workout Tuesday, the day before Boston’s opening exhibition game.
The Japanese star threw with a teammate and practiced his fielding on defensive plays. A coach would call out the situation, such as runners at first and third, and the fielders would run to the spots where they should be.
The workout was shorter than normal as the team began moving its base from its minor-league complex to City of Palms Park, about 21/2 miles away where it plays its home games.
Curt Schilling is expected to start and pitch two innings Wednesday night against the Minnesota Twins. Matsuzaka’s first start is scheduled for Friday night against Boston College. He probably will work two innings.
His first game against a major league team is scheduled for next Tuesday against the Florida Marlins in Jupiter, on the east coast of the state. It’s about a three-hour bus ride from Fort Myers, on the west coast.
Matsuzaka has thrown two batting practice sessions in spring training. On Monday, he threw 50 pitches, including 12 to David Ortiz and three to Manny Ramirez.
