AUGUSTA – Ethel Galanis Markos, 92, of Chapel Street, died Monday, Feb. 26, in Augusta.
She was born in Ipswich, Mass., on Feb. 28, 1914, and was one of nine children of the late Peter and Angela (Georges) Galanis.
She resided with her husband, Christopher Arthur Markos and children, in Ipswich, Mass., and Newburyport, Mass., before moving to Maine in the 1950s.
She belonged to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, in Lewiston, and had been a member the Ladies Philoptohos Society, in Lewiston, as well as the Daughters of Penelope and the Loganiko Society, of Ipswich, Mass.
She was employed at Hallowell Shoe Co. for 22 years, retiring in 1979. Her strong will, quick wit and pride in her Greek heritage will be remembered by her family.
She is survived by her four children, Cynthia Nichols, and her husband, George, of Palm Coast, Fla., Angelica Markos Barrett, and her husband, George, of Cumberland, Andreanne Markos, of Augusta, and Arthur C. Markos, and his wife, Diana, of Gardiner; seven grandchildren, Kristen Nichols, Elizabeth Nichols, Melinda Barrett Torrens, Christopher Barrett, Carol Markos Sinclair, Christopher Markos and Stephen Markos; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Galanis Viladenis and Bessie Galanis Haserlat, both of Ipswich, Mass.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at HealthReach Homecare and Hospice, MaineGeneral Medical Center and MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center at Gray Birch, for their kind, personal and professional care during the final days of her 50 years in Augusta. Special thanks go to Drs. Donald Magioncalda and Jean Cheng for the care and personal attention they gave over the last few years, and to the late Dr. Hsueh Cheng, whose care and compassion over many years allowed Ethel to enjoy a high quality of life at home for such a long time.
She was predeceased by her husband, Christopher, in 1968.
