STONEHAM – The town may get a playground for children if voters approve a town meeting article to acquire the use of a central parcel of land.

Voters will act on the 81-article warrant Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. in the Stoneham Fire Station.

“It’s exciting for us that we will have a playground and equipment,” said Town Clerk Midge Silvio of the move that will create a children’s playground in the center of town. There are no playground facilities for children here now.

The article will provide a property-tax waiver in the amount of $76.50 to the property owner for permission to use the land as a playground. If approved, the town will also purchase $9,000 worth of playground equipment.

Prior to the town meeting, voters will also elect a moderator to preside over the meeting, a town clerk and town treasurer. Selectman John Collins, the town clerk and Town Treasurer Mary Fox are up for re-election. Voters will be asked to change the term of office from one year to three years for the town clerk, tax collector, secretary to selectmen and the town treasurer’s positions.

Voters will also be asked to appropriate $35,000 for the repair of highways, tarring, patching and cutting bushes; raise $32,544 for snow removal and another $31,500 to maintain the dump.

A request to increase the property tax limit is also on tap. Voters will be asked to approve a levy limit of $90,712. The number was established by state law in case the municipal budget approved in this year’s annual town meeting warrant results in a tax commitment that is greater than the property tax levy limit.
