I am writing in response to the editorial Feb. 23 about “Whizzer” Wheeler’s time as a selectman in Waterford.

While not a resident of Waterford, I am a long-time retired selectman with more than 30 years of public service, and I feel that Wheeler’s actions and contempt for the people he should be serving have cast a dark shadow over the many dedicated men and women serving the people of Maine.

His inability to form a consensus and move initiative through town meeting, combined with his reaction to the county commissioners’ comments about assessing practices, and, finally, a tirade at a selectmen’s meeting – calling the townspeople liars and ingrates – speaks volumes for incompetence and arrogance.

Wheeler has divided the town in a way that will take years to heal.
