I write to comment about Dave Granlund’s Hillary Clinton minefield cartoon (Feb. 20) and the myriad news stories casting aspersions on her statements about her Christian faith.

On Feb. 19, Joe Conason, national correspondent for the New York Observer, wrote about Sen. Clinton’s vote for authorization of war: “The most convincing explanation is simple and happens to be true. When the president asked for the authorization to make war, he told the Senate that he would use that power ‘to keep the peace.'”

President Bush said the authorization was essential to force Saddam Hussein to permit United Nations’inspectors to return to Iraq and fulfill the pertinent resolutions. He promised he would invade only as “a last resort.”

Those false promises persuaded Sen. Clinton and many of her colleagues to support the war resolution.

Whenever I read or hear about the sincerity or insincerity of Sen. Clinton’s Christian faith, I think of her exclamation after a heavy piece of equipment fell from the ceiling during an interview many years ago.

As the equipment fell, which could have killed her, she exclaimed: “Jesus, Mary and Joseph!”

I exclaim this way, as do many others whose faith is sincere.

I believe Sen. Clinton is as well.
