KINGFIELD – A revision of the town’s comprehensive plan was easily approved at Saturday’s annual town meeting.

With no discussion, other than compliments and applause for the revision committee, the acceptance was a far cry from the one-vote margin of victory the controversial original plan had received when first passed some 10 years ago.

The major expenses approved Saturday include administration, $145,080; public works, $172,220; municipal services, $89,555, Kingfield’s transfer station share, $46,935; NorthStar Ambulance Service subsidy, $48,575; $47,500 for the fire department; $17,000 for a new highway department account; $21,000 for discounts and abatements; and $10,000 for a community planning and development reserve account.

An article for $3,500 for the Recreation Committee had been passed over by the Budget Committee because of lack of information, but following an explanation of activities by Committee Chairman David Hart, a majority of residents easily passed the measure. He noted the new programs this year include a winter shuttle bus service for children to Sugarloaf/USA.

Other appropriations approved included animal control, $2,180; fire equipment, $2,500 for the account and $2,500 toward purchase of Jaws of Life extrication equipment; parks and recreation, $1,320; cemeteries, $8,650; TRIO software computer upgrade, $2,500; Kingfield Days Committee, $2,000; Kingfield POPS Committee, $1,000; Kingfield Historical Society, $500; Franklin County Chamber of Commerce dues, $300; and Economic Ministry, $800.

When a resident questioned taxpayers’ funding of the annual Kingfield Pops event, it was explained that 100 volunteers participate, and the event costs $40,000 to present. The article easily passed.

At attempt to amend the interest rate to be charged for overdue taxes from 12 to 8 percent failed by a 42-30 margin, while an amendment to change the date at which interest charges begin from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31 passed by a 34-29 vote.
