AUBURN – The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA will host a special free SilverSneakers Fitness Program event on Friday, March 9, to address the needs of the older adult (65+) population.

The customized SilverSneakers classes are designed for older adults who want to improve their strength, flexibility, balance and endurance. The award-winning classes are taught by certified instructors. All participants are assigned a specially trained senior adviser to introduce them to the program and monitor their progress.

The YMCA will offer a meet and greet at 10 a.m. Friday, followed by a SilverSneakers class from 10:30 to 11:30, then a light lunch at 11:30, all free.

The SilverSneakers program is an opportunity to take charge of health. The participants move to music through a variety of low-impact exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball are offered for resistance. A chair is also used for seated or standing support.

There are two regularly scheduled SilverSneakers exercise classes each week: from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.

Enrollment in the program entitles the participant to full use of all other YMCA amenities, including the fitness center, exercise classes, gym, pool and all social and educational events. Individuals who have Medicare insurance through eligible Humana plans are covered 100 percent for YMCA membership.

The regular SilverSneakers classes are available for any YMCA member, and participants need not be 65 or older. The YMCA also offers a specially priced membership option for just the SilverSneakers program.

To register for the special free event, call the YMCA at 795-4095 or stop by the facility at 62 Turner St. For more about the program or any other YMCA program, visit www.alymca.com.
