Rumford – John J. Bernard Sr., age 90, of Franklin Street, died Monday March 5, at Rumford Community Home with his family at his side.
He was born in Rumford on August 8, 1916, a son of Joseph P. and Amelia (Arsenault) Bernard. He was educated in Rumford Schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School Class of 1935, where he excelled in winter sports.
He was employed for 41 years as a truck driver for Oxford Paper Co. He was a communicant of St. Athanasius and St. John Catholic Church. He was a member of the LeParesseux Snowshoe Club, Rumford Senior Citizens and the Dixfield Neighborly Seniors. He enjoyed playing cribbage, beano and his many trips to the Casino’s and senior excursions. He also enjoyed fishing, woodworking and get together’s with his loving family at Worthley Pond.
Surviving are a son, John J. Bernard Jr. and companion Brenda Wiley, of Saco; two daughters, Jeanne B. Lambert and husband Robert, of Rumford, and Janice A. Bordeau and husband Arthur, of Mexico; a sister, Louise Benway of Kingston, Mass.; sisters-in-law, Freda Bernard of Rumford, and Rejane Bernard of West Peru; eleven grandchildren, Bill Lambert and wife Cheryl, and their sons, Mike and Josh, Jeff Lambert and partner Albert Barosso, Mark Lambert and wife Christine, and daughters, Samantha and Rebecca, Cynthia Moskal and husband Ed, and sons, Dylon and Justen, Todd Bernard and wife Shirley, and children, Emily and Samuel, Tracy Pinkham and husband Steve, and children, Jacob and Abby, Jamie Bernard and wife Michelle, and children, Julia and Soon Ali, Terri Corriveau and companion Matt Foreman, and sons, Mason and Keegan, Kimberly Bernard and companion Robert Haas, and sons, Austin and Colin, and also Timothy, Abby and Josh Haas, Eric Bordeau and companion Kate Brass, and daughter, Angela, and Ryan Bordeau and companion Brandy Bouchard, and daughter Abriel, and also Mike, Tom, and Joe Bordeau, Rene Parsons, and Paula Wyman and families.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife Irene M. (Petrie) Bernard; longtime companion Carmel Garneau; two brothers, Philip and Roger Bernard; and four sisters, Emelda Erwin, Marguerite Ahearn, Evelyn Hand and Ann Bernard.
