Picture this: every day for over 3 years, you have been living in fear of the militia in the country who are inescapable. Every day, you are faced with the threat of death and can no longer call home a safe place. This is how reality is in Darfur, Sudan, where four hundred thousand innocent people including children and babies have been killed. If that is not enough, two and a half million people have been chased from their homes, leaving them to live in displaced-persons camps in Sudan and Chad. The militia known as the “Janjaweed” are also responsible for the rape of thousands of women and girls.
This is reality. This is happening, But why? Didn’t we learn the terror from the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide? After three years, why are these inhumane acts of displacement, starvation, rape, and mass slaughter still going on as we all go through our lives, not realizing how lucky we are? Where is the United States to help? We need to realize how urgent the matter is and that the people of Darfur need our help.
