WILTON – Some of the town’s four police officers have been placed on administrative suspension, Town Manager Peter Nielsen told selectmen Tuesday.
Further details were unavailable.
The suspensions are part of an internal investigation by police Chief Dennis Brown following up on information he and Nielsen received from the district attorney.
During the investigation, Nielsen told the board, law enforcement coverage will be provided by remaining town officers and those from outside agencies.
Nielsen asserted that he could not provide additional details, including how many officers are suspended, during the investigation because it’s a personnel issue. He told selectmen that the chief intends to conclude the investigation as quickly as possible.
During a special meeting held Feb. 16, selectmen instructed the town manager and police chief to meet with the district attorney and seek facts regarding allegations of poor work by officers.
A month prior to that meeting, District Attorney Norman Croteau had sent the town a letter instructing the Police Department to send all juvenile sex crime cases to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department for investigation.
Concerns from people in the community and representatives from organizations serving sexual assault and domestic violence victims had also been voiced to selectmen. Some said that police have been inappropriate in the investigations and unsupportive of the victims.
During the February meeting, Croteau revealed that problems with town police made it difficult to prosecute many Wilton cases. Some of the problems include poor investigative techniques, poor reports, general untimeliness and a lack of detail.
