Everybody is familiar with the classic story of the princess and the pea. A princess came to the castle of a lonely prince, and was put to the test by the Queen. Under twenty mattresses a small pea was placed, and when the princess didn’t sleep that night, she showed the sensitivity of true royalty. Alas, she married the prince and they lived happily ever after.

As the Minstrel (Kelin Sevit) will tell you, that story is not completely true…

In all actuality, Princess Winnifred (Danielle Taylor) was one of thirteen princesses tested by the queen (Ashley McWhorter), and probably the least lady-like of them all. Once Upon a Mattress begins with the failure of the twelfth princess, and the town’s frustration at not being able to marry until Prince Dauntless (Chris Hodgkin) does. The plot line is jumpstarted when Sir Harry (Renald Lefebvre), obligated by time-dependent circumstances, goes on a journey to find a suitable candidate. Three weeks later, he returns to the castle with Princess Winnifred, a quirky girl to whom Prince Dauntless takes an immediate liking. However, Queen Aggravain and the Wizard (Matt Reed) are determined to fail her. The mute king (Ian Smedley), the Jester (Christina Zahn), and the Minstrel decide that they will help Winnifred pass the test. Are they successful? Will the Minstrel’s liking for Lady Larken (Elsje Schipper) overturn their plans? Will they find out what the test is in time? Come see the musical to find out!

Special thanks go out to the Director/Light Designer/Set Designer, Richard Martin, Producers Helene St.Hilaire and Katy Bouchard, Music Director Jim Raymond, Vocal Director Rebecca Poppke, Choreographer Lacey Moyse, Costumer Paula Masseli, and Props Master Jeanne Giroux.
