Swim lessons

LEWISTON – The YWCA of Central Maine has begun registration for “Introduction to Competitive Swimming.” The course is designed to introduce participants to the four competitive strokes, starts and turns. Participants must be able to swim 50 yards. The course will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The class, designed for youth ages 5 to 14, will run from March 27 through May 3. The cost is $50 for YWCA members and $70 for nonmembers.

Author to speak

AUBURN – Suzanne Johnson, author of “Til Death Do Us Part,” will address the Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group in the Clover Health Care Recreation Room from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 9. All caregivers are welcome.

Chapter Martel

LEWISTON – Chapter Martel, Association Canado-Americaine, will meet at 1:15 p.m. Monday, March 12, at Frye School Retirement Hall, 140 Ash St., rear entrance. The meal prior to the meeting will be at noon at the Dudley’s at the Ramada Inn, Pleasant Street. President Cecile Paradis hopes to have a quorum present to discuss Franco Week.

Cancer program

LEWISTON – The Central Maine Comprehensive Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society will present “Exploring Self-Esteem and Intimacy” on Tuesday, March 13.

The program will define three essential components of human sexuality, explore self-esteem issues that may arise as a result of cancer and its treatment and assist participants in identifying ways to affirm themselves despite these changes.

The session will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Conference Room I on the lower level of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building adjacent to Central Maine Medical Center.

The program is free and preregistration is required. Anyone with questions or wishing to register for the program should call Julie Rioux at 795-7511.

Society speaker

LISBON FALLS – The guest speaker for the Lisbon Historical Society’s 7 p.m. meeting on Wednesday, March 14, will be Lisbon Recreation Director Mark Stevens.

He is a graduate of Lisbon High School and is coach of the school’s wrestling and field hockey teams. He will discuss “History of Lisbon’s Recreation Department, Then and Now, 1970 to 2007.”

The program will be held at the Archive Museum at MTM Center, 18 School St., Rooms 5 and 6 (rear entry). It is free and open to the public. For more information, call Dorothy Smith at 353-8510.

Support speaker

LEWISTON – The MS Support Group and Caregivers will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at the Lepage Conference Center, 99 Campus Ave. Due to the cancellation of last month’s meeting, Noreen Comeau, NP, MS specialist, will be guest speaker. OES to elect

MECHANIC FALLS – Dwinal Chapter 28, Order of the Eastern Star, will hold its annual meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at the Masonic Hall, 474 South Main St. The annual reports will be presented and members will elect officers.

They are still collecting items for the animal shelter and books for elementary school libraries. The meeting will be preceded by a 6:30 p.m. supper. All members of the order are invited.

Breastfeeding

AUBURN – Expectant women and breastfeeding mothers are invited to the La Leche League meeting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, at 102 Bennett Ave. Babies are welcome.

Discussion, “Breastfeeding, Avoiding and Overcoming Difficulties,” will focus on concerns about preparing to nurse baby at birth and adjusting to babies’ changing needs. All concerns about breastfeeding are welcome for discussion. For breastfeeding help or directions to the meeting, call the La Leche League leader at 782-6645.

Teachers to meet

AUBURN – The Androscoggin Retired Educators Association will meet at the Good Shepherd Food-Bank on Wednesday, March 14. The business meeting will begin at 11 a.m. A buffet lunch will be prepared and served by the staff of the food bank. Reservations for the buffet lunch are $7. Club Richelieu

AUBURN – The local chapter of Club Richelieu International will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Rolandeau’s Restaurant, 775 Washington St. North. A meal will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Grange dinner

POLAND – As a community service project, Excelsior Grange, 446 Harris Hill Road, will host a smothered beef dinner on Sunday, April 15. Proceeds will be given to the fund for refurbishing the Mechanic Falls Library, which suffered damage by vandals recently. More information will be available soon.
