Wilton – Quentin D. Vining, 87, of Wilton, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, March 7, with family by his side.
He was born Feb. 29, 1920, a son of Bertrand G. and Violet (Whitney) Vining. He attended Weld schools and on July 27, 1946, married Frances A. Lakin in Jay.
He served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Germany. After his discharge from the Army, he worked driving a truck for a short time, and then was employed at G.H. Bass for forty years where he retired at the age of 62. He also did odd jobs such as caretaking cottages, cutting wood and driving cars for Tuttle’s.
He was a quiet man with a strong sense of character and hard worker who had many friends. He loved the outdoors; fishing, hunting, gardening and playing cards. He was a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 61 years, Frances, of Wilton; children, David G. Vining, of Jay, Barbara Vining, of Wilton, Kenneth L. Vining, of Wilton; a daughter-in-law, Meredith Vining, of Wilton; grandchildren, Timothy Vining, Cathy Vining, Travis Vining, Jessica Vining, Joshua Vining, and Dylan Vining; a very special granddaughter, Cindy Kaherl, who has been such a great caregiver for “Grampy” along with her husband Shane; brothers, Hiram “Buddy” Vining and his wife, June, of Weld, and Bernard Vining and his wife, Jane, of Weld.
He was predeceased by two sons, Rodney Vining and Ronald Vining; brothers, Douglas Vining and Jesse “Pug” Vining; sisters, Lenora (Vining) Steward and Shirley (Vining) Plaisted.
The family wishes to thank all the family, many friends, care givers, Home Resources of Maine, and Elder Independence for their help and support during the last few years. They would also like to thank Androscoggin Home Health Care and Hospice for all of their caring and support during this very difficult time.
