A Thomas Jefferson impersonator from New Gloucester will announce his write-in campaign for president of the United States today – as Thomas Jefferson.
He’s got a platform and, he swears, plans for campaign swings through New Hampshire, Nevada and Iowa, all in character. Should Jefferson get enough votes, the man, August “Gus” Jaccaci, says he’ll consider running the country.
The kickoff is planned for noon at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., where Jaccaci said he has taught, coached and worked as assistant to the dean of admissions.
“I anticipate walking down the steps of Widener Library in the middle of Harvard Yard … and speaking to whosoever’s there about the future of the great American experiment in self-governance,” Jaccaci said in an interview from his home Thursday.
He’s been “enacting” Jefferson for 10 years, speaking to conferences, high schools and business groups. He believes he and the dead president have a strong physical resemblance.
Jaccaci, who turns 70 today, said he “absolutely” expects he’ll be taken seriously.
He boiled down his campaign themes to: “End war. Love nature. And know your neighbors.”
And yes, he anticipates some ribbing.
“I’ve been doing this for 10 years and people have asked, ‘What about Sally Hennings and why didn’t you let your slaves go?’ That’s part of the dance; I’m always ready and willing and eager to deal with whatever the public wants to talk about.”
Jaccaci spent 30 years in education and now, “I make my living as a social architect.” He’s also a futurist, giving Thomas Jefferson’s spin on society from the vantage point of 2020.
“The current political scene needs somewhat of a radical facelift,” Jaccaci said.
His wife, Joanne, will accompany him on the “Rolling Renaissance” campaign and at today’s announcement, he said, but it’ll depend on how cold it is outdoors whether she dresses at Mrs. Jefferson.
