Topsy-turvy term: Credit-card company executives have a special term for those card holders who pay off their entire balances every month, thus not incurring any finance charges. It’s “deadbeat.” We don’t know if they call people who don’t pay even the minimum balance “our best customers.”

Thursday’s answer: The lowest toll for transit through the Panama Canal was the 36 cents charged to American adventurer Richard Halliburton, who swam through it in 1928.
