FREEPORT – The Augusta Symphony Orchestra and the Maine Youth Orchestra, conducted by Paul Ross, will present a joint concert Saturday, March 17, at the Freeport Performing Arts Center. The concert features the classic musical story of Peter and the Wolf, by Sergei Prokofiev, as told in an original Maine adaptation written and narrated by humorist Tim Sample and accompanied by the larger-than-life puppets of Martha Truscott.
Sample wrote “Our Boy, Hubert, and the Wolf” to accompany the familiar music of “Peter and the Wolf” in his trademark Maine-style.
The story is presented visually by Martha Truscott’s puppet troupe. The “puppets” are adults, children and youth from the community portraying the characters in the story through the use of masks and costumes. The audience will be introduced to the instruments of the orchestra in a unique adaptation designed to appeal to young and old alike.
The concert also includes the Augusta Symphony Orchestra’s performance of the Hansel and Gretel Overture, by E. Humperdinck. The Maine Youth Orchestra will perform Hungarian Dance No. 5 and Academic Festival Overture, by Brahms. A special guest performance by students of the Pineland Suzuki School will include the Viotti Violin Concerto No. 23 in G major with violin soloist Willie Ellis.
A cellist for the Portland String Quartet, Ross holds degrees in cello and conducting from the Juilliard School of Music. He is a member of the music faculty of Colby and Bowdoin colleges and also conducts the Androscoggin Valley Community Orchestra.
The concert will begin at 4:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors 65-plus, $5 for students; children 12 and younger admitted free. Tickets are available in advance at Shaw’s in Freeport and through www.mktix.com.
