CUNDY’S HARBOR – Donald David Caron, 71, of Millstone Road in Cundy’s Harbor (Harpswell), died Thursday, March 8, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born in Brunswick on March 28, 1935, the son of Wilfred J. and Marguerite B. Rodrigue Caron and attended Brunswick schools.
He was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict, serving 18 months in Korea.
On Sept. 21, 1978, he married Jacqueline Moreau of Brunswick.
Mr. Caron was a self-employed businessman and for 25 years was owner of Caron’s Autobody Shop and Caron’s Appraisal Service. In May 1979, Mr. Caron was employed by Sentry Insurance as a senior appraiser for the state of Maine, retiring in May 1991.
He started Caron’s Construction in June 1991 and continued to operate the business until retiring in 1994. For several years he worked for Crooker & Sons.
He enjoyed clamming, lobstering and participating in the Bailey Island Tuna Tournaments. He built his own tuna fishing boat and helped his friends build theirs. He also enjoyed hunting in the familiar woods of Eustis and Stratton. An accomplished pilot, he enjoyed flying and was a lifetime member of the Quiet Birdmen. He was a charter member of the New England Ice Racing Association, winning numerous races.
Family was important to Don, and his home was often a gathering place. He was always quick to share his knowledge and to help family and friends with their projects.
He served on the board of directors of the Brunswick Chamber of Commerce. He was a trustee of the Brunswick Sewer District for 17 years, and served as chairman of the board for five years.
Don was a member of St. John’s the Baptist Church and was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Sekenger Council. He was also a member of the Brunswick Elks Lodge and the American Legion Post of Topsham. He had been a member of the Exchange and the Kiwanis Clubs of Brunswick.
Surviving, besides his wife of Cundy’s Harbor (Harpswell), are two sons, Ronald J. and Richard D. Caron, both of Brunswick; a stepson, Marc V. Lemieux of Boston; a sister, Jacqueline C. Drapeau of Brunswick; a brother, Leo Caron of Augusta; two grandchildren, Seth Caron and Taylor Marie Caron, both of Brunswick; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
