• Shooting high into the heavens, the Aurora Borealis or northern lights made a beautiful display last night. The effect was impressive but as the grand spectacle was at its best in the early morning hours there were not many people astir to enjoy it. However, those who were out on the streets paused many times to watch the fast and strangely moving lights.

The Canadian dollar soared to its highest point in 24 years today in terms of U.S. currency. The Canadian dollar was quoted at $1.04 23-32 around midday, its peak since the $1.05 5/8 in November, 1933. It fell back later and closed at $1.04 21-32, up 1-32 from last Friday’s closing.

• This winter is “sensational” for snowmobilers because there’s plenty of snow, but it’s also good for merchants and the state because snowmobilers are spending a lot of money.
There are about 57,000 snowmobilers registered this year in Maine, which is 5,500 more than last year, Farren said.
• Now, with the emphasis being placed on national security by President Ronald Reagan and his administration, there is renewed interest in the military as a career. It is being reflected on the campuses as ROTC enrollments are on the rise. It is a welcome development.
