BIDDEFORD – Dr. J. Wayne Tyler, of Kennebunkport, passed away at Southern Maine Medical Center, on Monday, March 5.
He was a graduate of Washington State University, and the University of Oregon Medical School. He served in the U.S. Army and attained the rank of Captain as a medical officer.
He did his internship at the County Hospital in San Bernardino, Calif., and completed his ophthalmology residency, at Long Beach Veterans’ Hospital, in Long Beach, Calif. He was board certified in ophthalmology, and was a member of the New England Ophthalmological Society, American Medical Association, Androscoggin County Medical Society, and the Maine Medical Association.
He was a staff member at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, and Central Maine Medical Center, in Lewiston. He first maintained a private practice in ophthalmology in Boise, Idaho, and moved to Lewiston in 1971, where he practiced ophthalmology with his stepson, Dr. John Lonsdale, at Central Maine Eye Care, until 1996.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Tyler; he is also survived by his brother, Dr. George Tyler, of Prescott, Ariz.; also surviving are his four children, Kim Martindale, Kerry Tyler, Mickey Ryan, and Meg Tyler; as well as his stepchildren, Colleen Sturgill, John Lonsdale, Michael Lonsdale, Trish Morin and their families.
