JAY – This town has a bike problem.

There are 15 to 20 bicycles in the basement of the police station that no one has claimed or reported missing, police Chief Larry White Sr. said.

People usually call police to report a bike left on their lawn or to say there’s been a bike on the street for a couple of days. Police pick them up and bring them to the station.

Police run the serial numbers, but they’re usually not registered, White said. With no report of a bike missing, down to the basement they go.

“It may sound foolish,” White said, “but this town has a bicycle problem.”

He doesn’t understand why people who pay money for the bikes don’t claim them, he said.

The bicycles are a mix of girls and boys styles and range from mountain bikes to 20-inch bikes.

There are a variety of them.

Anybody who has been missing a bike in the past six months, may call the police at 897-6766 or come to the station and give a description of the bike and police will check to see if its in the storage room, White said.
