Once again (Sun Journal, March 10), another snowmobiler has died. Once again, high speed was the cause. Once again, he was reported to be wearing a helmet, as if that were absolution.

Now I want to make one thing perfectly clear: Snowmobilers wear helmets to keep their heads warm so they can careen about at obscene speeds. Without helmets, they would freeze.

If the state of Maine wants to reduce the carnage on the trails, it should ban the use of helmets.
