LOWELL, Mass. (AP) – The Portland Pirates squeaked out a 4-3 shootout victory against the Lowell Devils on Friday night.
Brian Salcido, Joe Motzko, and Bjorn Melin scored for Portland in the shoot out to lock up the victory, while Ryan Murphy was the lone Devil to beat Pirates goalie Sebestien Caron.
Portland got on the board first when Lowell goalie Frank Doyle stopped the puck behind his own net, but Portland’s Geoff Peters swooped in to steal the puck and stuff it past Doyle for the game’s first goal 3:26 into the first period.
The Devils responded less than two minutes later with a wrister from Mike Pandolfo to tie the score 1-1.
Ryan Murphy scored another goal for Lowell in the first period, his 16th of the season.
The Devils held a 2-1 advantage until Portland knotted it up again on a power play goal from Matt Keith at 4:47 of the second period. Lowell jumped back out in front, 3-2, on a Chris Minard goal with just over ten minutes to play in the second.
Portland tied the game again on Mark Hartigan’s blast from about five feet inside the blue line. The Pirates were skating with a two-man advantage thanks to a roughing penalty on Lowell’s Alex Brooks followed by a holding call against Jason Ryznar.
