I have said this before in previous letters to the editor. If the city of Lewiston would get rid of the granite stones that line both sides of Lisbon Street, and turn it back to a two-lane street again, as it was intended to be, the city would be much better off. Nobody wants to drive on those rough granite stones.

Two lanes would ease the vast majority of the downtown business-hour traffic jams.

Lisbon Street hasn’t seen any upgrades since the early 1980s, when those awnings were added to the downtown area over the stores, which are mostly gone now.

But the biggest problem is those granite stones that line both sides of Lisbon Street from Ash Street to Main Street. The width of the sidewalks in that area could be narrowed as well. There is no need to have super-sized sidewalks, especially in an area that needs space for parking.

No wonder businesses don’t want to locate downtown.
