LEWISTON – “Nutrition During and After Treatment” will be the topic of a program set for Tuesday, March 20, at Central Maine Medical Center.

Registered dietitian Jill Young will discuss how eating well and being physically active are important to the well-being of individuals during and after cancer treatment.

The class will offer nutrition information and strategies for identifying and managing treatment-related problems. It also will address the challenge of setting and achieving goals for maintaining a healthy weight, nutritious diet and a physically active lifestyle after treatment.

The program will be offered from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Conference Room I, Lower Level of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building at CMMC. The program is free, but advance registration is required. Call Julie Rioux at 795-7511.

The program is being jointly sponsored by the Central Maine Comprehensive Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society.

Music therapist Ellen Bowman will discuss “Tuning In: Music to Promote Healing for People Living with Cancer” at the Wednesday, March 21, meeting of the Central Maine Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Cancer Wellness and Support Group.

Music can enhance quality of life for people living with cancer and their caregivers. Music therapy may encourage emotional expression, promote social interaction, relieve symptoms and stress and contribute to an overall sense of well being.

According to the American Cancer Society, there is evidence that when used along with conventional treatment, music therapy can help reduce pain and relieve chemotherapy-induced side effects. Some studies have found that music therapy can lower blood pressure, breathing and heart rates.

The program will be offered from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in Conference Room I, Lower Level of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building at CMMC. The program is free and no advance registration is required. Anyone with questions should call Kerry Irish at 795-7118.
