Election season gets under way Monday when nomination papers for town offices in Norway and Paris become available.

Norway and Paris voters will go to the polls June 12. Oxford voters will make nominations from the town meeting floor on June 16.

Town clerks in Norway, Paris and Oxford are looking for a good turnout as nearly half a dozen selectmen’s seats are open, along with school directors, library trustees and other positions.

“A lot of times, if the same people are running no one will run against them if they’re doing a good job,” Paris Town Clerk Elizabeth Larson said.

In Norway, Town Clerk Shirley Boyce said papers are available for the June 12 annual town election beginning on Monday. Nomination papers must have 25 registered voters and be returned to her office by April 30. There are 3,700 registered voters in town.

Incumbent Selectmen Robert Walker and George Tibbetts are up for re-election.

Donald Ware is up for re-election as SAD 17 director and library trustees Dennis Gray, Lynette Gatchell and Charles Longley are up for re-election.

In Paris, Larson reported that there are two openings for three-year terms as selectmen, one opening for a two-year term on the Paris Utility District and one, three-year term on the same board.

William Merrill and Barbara Payne are up for re-election on the Board of Selectmen.

The deadline for filing nomination papers with the town clerk is 4 p.m. April 30.

Paris requires a minimum of 25 registered voters to sign the nomination papers, but no more than 100 signatures will be counted.

Larson said the run for the selectmen’s board varies each year.

In 2005, there were two open seats, but six people ran for the board.

Last year, there was one opening for a two-year seat when Selectman Ernest Fitts resigned. Four candidates sought that position.

In Oxford, Town Manager Michael Chammings said the June 16 annual town election will include three open spots on the five-member Board of Selectmen. The unusual occurrence is because one selectman moved out of town and a second resigned to become a country commissioner. Incumbent Selectman Scott Owens is up for re-election.

SAD 17 directors Ronald Kugell and Olive Sanborn are also up for re-election.

Unlike Norway and Paris, candidates in Oxford are nominated from the floor of town meeting rather than through the nomination paper process.
