NORWAY – Alfreda I. Cook, 74, peaceably passed away on Monday, March 19, at her daughter’s home in Norway, with her family by her side.

Born April 19, 1932, in New Gloucester, the daughter of Wendell Tripp and Blanche Hines Tripp, she attended school in Norway.

The first part of her working life was spent at the local shoe shop, B.E. Cole Shoe Company. She later became the proud owner/operator of Seboomook Wilderness Campground at Northwest Carry.

On the shores of Moose Head Lake, Freda met the love of her life, Galen James Cook of Thorndike. They were married on Sept. 16, 1978, at the First Congregational Church of South Paris.

Together they spent the summer months enjoying all aspects of nature including fishing, hunting, boating and camping. Her husband lovingly describes her as a “good sport.” She even became a NASCAR fan out of self-defense!

She took pride in planning the annual family reunion which served as a time for everyone to look forward to each summer. With a lot of laughter around the campfire, it created lasting memories.

As much as she enjoyed the large gathering of family each summer, she also took pleasure in spending quality time with her children and grandchildren.

Freda and Galen began to spend their winters in Zephyrhills, Fla., in 1989. Here they enjoyed dancing, biking, lasting friendships and the sunshine. The annual HOBO Dance competition became an event to look forward to. She put much time and effort into making her gardens grow and especially loved her roses.

Wherever her travels took her, Moose Head Lake, Norway, South Paris or Zephyrhills, she had the ability to make a house a home. She will be fondly remembered as a woman who touched many lives as a loving wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She is survived by her loving husband, Galen James Cook, of Norway; her sister, Fay Day, of Auburn; three daughters, Juanita Smith and her husband, Doug, of Norway, Pam Brochu and her husband, Luke, of Glenburn and Dodi Mingo, of Jackman; five stepchildren, Paul Cook, of Hermon, Cheryl Sweeny and her husband, Phillip, of Hill, N.H., Gary Cook and his wife, Angie, of Brownville, Terri Richards and her husband, Dave, of Dover-Foxcroft, Tracy Cook and his wife, Sandra, of Corinth; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
