LEWISTON – Laura L. Giroux, 78, of Turner, died Monday, March 19, at Central Maine Medical Center surrounded by all her family and many friends.

She was born at Milton Plantation on Sept. 10, 1928, the daughter of Harry C. and Jenny Ellingwood Libby.

She attended schools in Woodstock and had been a homemaker all of her life. She also worked in local area shoe factories and as a waitress in local restaurants.

She worked in South Paris during World War II, tanning horsehair hides for the U. S. Army.

She moved to Norway where she met and married Perian A. Dudley of South Paris on Dec. 31, 1945.

She later married Lawrence E. Giroux in Turner on August 23, 1952. He passed away on November 8, 1970.

She was a member of the local Christian church where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school and belonged to the women’s auxillary group. In 1963, she and Mrs. Beach started the local Cub Scout Den No. 187 and she was Den Mother for 6 years. They all enjoyed outings at Channel 10 & 13, swimming at Bear Pond in Sumner, and winter outings. She also volunteered at Togus VA Hospital for a year.

She was Norman Crooker’s companion for 22 years before his death in December of 1993.

She enjoyed geneology, hunting, fishing, her family and just being outdoors. She was an avid CB person. She became a CB celebrity as “Indian Spirit,” helping truckers find their way to local paper mills and egg producers.

She will be sadly missed by her family.

She is survived by three daughters, Rosalie Caron and husband, Richard, of Leeds, Eva Leavitt and husband, Peter, of North Turner, and Carmen Keisman of Greene; seven sons, John Dudley and wife, Margot, of Hartford, Larry Giroux Jr. and wife, Cindy, of Hartford, Edward Giroux and wife, Debbie, of Greene, Lorenzo Giroux and wife, Pat, of Bridgton, Paul Giroux of Concord, N.H., Tracey Giroux and wife, Sheila, of North Turner, and Troy Giroux and his companion, Ericka, of North Turner; 21 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; a brother, Donald Ellingwood of Wisconsin; and a sister, Grace Daggett of Connecticut.

She was predeceased by a son, Robert L. Dudley, on April 26, 1996.
