AUBURN – Park Avenue neighbors will get a glimpse of traffic-improvement ideas and sidewalk plans Thursday night at Park Avenue Elementary School.

Representatives from Gorrill Palmer Engineering will report the results of their study of the Park Avenue corridor, from Court Street north to Mount Auburn Avenue.

Auburn City Manager Pat Finnigan said she didn’t expect the meeting to consider the cost of doing the work.

“This is an opportunity for the engineers to present their study and get feedback from the people who live there,” Finnigan said. “They’ve met with neighbors before, so this meeting will be a chance to see what they’re suggesting and to make sure it’s what the neighbors want.”

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Park Avenue Elementary School cafeteria.

The study began last spring, months before the elementary school opened. At the time, neighbors complained the road was becoming a favorite shortcut for Wal-Mart shoppers who lived south and west of the downtown.

Neighbors have called for work to slow traffic on the road and increase viewing distances. They also requested a sidewalk connecting to the new elementary school.

Engineers began traffic counts and meeting with neighbors in June. They went back after the school had opened to determine the school’s impact on the street.

Finnigan said engineers have some suggested improvements.

“But I think the main recommendation will be to do the work in phases,” she said. “So, this meeting will help determine which parts are priorities now, and what can wait.”
