LEWISTON – For Bates College radio DJs, Linwood “Lucky Lindy” Martinkus stood out amongst the students.

“He was the most youthful 75-year-old I ever saw,” said Travis Jackson, one of Martinkus’ fellow DJs on WRBC 91.5 FM, the Bates College radio station.

Martinkus died Saturday while shoveling his walk. Jackson and his fellow Bates DJs will remember him on-air from 4-6 p.m. tonight, playing his favorite music and telling stories.

“He was guy that should have retired to a warmer climate, but he stuck around because he loved the community,” Jackson said.

Martinkus worked as Bates College security guard before coming to the radio station in 1986. He had a weekly program on WRBC called “Bonanza,” playing a mix of pre- and post-World War II music. The show ranged from jazz to bluegrass, with some light rock, Jackson said.

His show normally aired from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays.

“We’re going to honor him in his own time slot,” Jackson said. “We’ll have other DJs calling in, stopping by and talking about what they remember. Anybody that listens will see just how much he meant to the station.”
