FARMINGTON – Joseph B. Hanscom Jr., 87, of North Jay, died on Tuesday, March 20, at the Edgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center in Farmington.
He was born on Feb. 15, 1920, in Jay, a son of Joseph B. and Minnie (Newcomb) Hanscom Sr. He attended Jay schools.
On March 2, 1945, he married Methelyn Ross in Rangeley. They made their home in North Jay where Joseph worked initially for Omer Beisaw doing road construction. He later went to work at Norwock Shoe, in North Jay, and then the town of Jay, where he served as the road foreman from 1969 to 1985, when he retired.
He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Jay Fire Department, which he served as the assistant chief. He also served on the town of Jay’s budget committee and planning board.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, vegetable gardening and spending summers at his camp in Rangeley. Later in life, his greatest pleasure was watching his great-grandsons’ football games.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Methelyn, of North Jay; a daughter, Annette Conant and her husband, Paul, of North Jay; a son, Michael Hanscom and his wife, Linda, of Westbrook; three grandchildren, Becky Rider and her husband, William, of North Jay, Derek Hanscom and his fiancée, Jessica Drost, of Gorham, and Courtney Hanscom and her fiancé, Justin Carmichael, of Westbrook; three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Devlen Rider, and Austin Hanscom; and a stepsister, Beverly Glines and her husband, Robert, of Norway.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Kidder and Ada Beisaw; and one stepsister, Betty Ring.
