CARTHAGE – New England Celtic Arts will host Canadian Celtic supergroup Beolach at Skye Theater on Tuesday, March 27, at 7 p.m. There will be a pre-show fiddle jam at 6:30 for those who wish to play with Mairi Rankin and Andrea Beaton.
The pre-show jam is becoming a regular feature at Skye Theater. Audience members bring whatever they play and join in a 20-minute jam session with the featured artists of the evening prior to the show. Maine fiddle great Don Roy is coming to this show so the session promises to be lively. Roy made the fiddle that Mairi Rankin plays in concert.
The concert at the Skye wraps up a 16-date tour for Beolach that started on March 8 at the Unity performing Arts Center in Unity. Beolach is becoming a favorite in the Maine Celtic and folk scene. This past August they were the featured Celtic group at the American Folk Festival in Bangor, and also played at the Newport and Milwaukee folk festivals this past year. They have toured extensively in the United Kingdom and Europe, playing to sold out shows.
Beolach thrills audiences with energetic performances, witty presentation, and their versatility as step dancers. Cape Breton tunes are removed from their usual fiddle/piano context and presented with the energy of a young four-piece band. Although presenting these tunes in a contemporary style, Beolach maintains a respect and understanding of traditional Cape Breton music.
Skye Theater is at 2 Highland Drive off Winter Hill Road and Route 2 in Carthage. Ticket price is $10 at the door. Call New England Celtic Arts at 562-4445 for reservations and directions. More info at www.necelticarts.com.
