OES to initiate

LISBON FALLS – Pioneer Chapter 11, Order of the Eastern Star, will hold a special meeting for the purpose of initiation at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at the Ancient York Masonic Hall, Route 196. Refreshments will be served following the meeting. All members of the order are invited.

Marine program

AUBURN – The Central Maine Detachment, Marine Corps League, will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 29, to hold a special memorial service for the “Four Chaplains” at the New Auburn American Legion Post, 71 South Main St. (use side entrance on Cook Street) All are welcome.

The four chaplains, a Catholic priest, Jewish rabbi and two Protestant ministers, gave their life vests for four soldiers as the USAT Dorchester was sinking in 1943. A torpedo from a German submarine ripped through the hull of the ship.

When there were not enough life vests to go around, the chaplains removed theirs and handed them to four soldiers.The chaplains spent their last moments singing hymns and praying arm in arm as the ship disappeared beneath the waves.

Society supper

BOWDOIN – The Bowdoin Historical Society will meet at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at the FHC Inc. Building. Following a potluck supper, President Joanne Coombs will conduct a business meeting, and a white elephant auction will be held with John Lambert and Michael Bohunicky as auctioneers. Members should bring goods for the auction and money to buy items. The public is invited and those wishing to join the society are welcome.

Parents’ night

WALES – Wales Central School will hold an incoming parent information night at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24. Kindergarten screening/registration will be held Monday April 30. Call Melanie at 375-6995 for an appointment.
