DIXFIELD – Selectmen will begin reviewing applications for town manager next Monday.
Chairwoman Bettina Martin said Monday night that nine applications have been received so far. Applicants come from both in-state and out of state. The deadline for applying is Friday.
The position became open as a result of former Town Manager Jeff Jacobson leaving last Friday after serving for about 14 months. He returned to his home state of Minnesota where he will begin a similar position next week.
Martin said the Hiring Committee comprises selectmen and two residents. However, as of Monday, no one has applied for a seat on the committee. That deadline also closes Friday.
She said the special meeting set for 5 p.m., Monday, April 2, will be a time to review the town manager applications, then possibly narrow the field. She expects that two or three people will be interviewed for the position.
In the interim, neighboring Mexico has agreed to share its town manager, John Madigan, until Dixfield hires a manager. That is expected to be sometime in late May or early June.
Madigan attended his first Dixfield selectmen’s meeting Monday. The seat was familiar. He had served as half-time town manager for Dixfield and half-time town manager for Mexico for about seven months prior to Jacobson taking the Dixfield position, and he returned to his full-time, Mexico-town-manager job.
The board is also looking for a full-time water and wastewater operator for the town’s water and sewer departments.
Selectman Brenda Turbide, who is also a member of the town’s Water Advisory Board, said nine people have applied for that position. The deadline is Friday for applications.
In other matters Monday, the board approved making a donation of $150 toward the $12,500 cost of a Vietnam Memorial monument to be dedicated to soldiers from Oxford County who died during the Vietnam War. At least one of the 36 identified soldiers is from Dixfield. The memorial will be dedicated on May 19 at Veterans Park in Rumford.
The board also:
• approved a purchasing policy amendment that lets department heads buy necessary items valued up to $2,500 before going before selectmen for approval.
