RUMFORD – With nomination papers available for only a couple of days, three people have already shown interest in running for one of two selectmen’s seats, and two people are seeking re-election to the SAD 43 board.
Town Clerk Jane Giasson said as of Wednesday, 12-year veteran Selectman Jolene Lovejoy, vice chairwoman of the Board of Selectmen and a community activist, has taken out nomination papers to run for a fifth, three-year term.
Ron Theriault, a local businessman who has been vocal about many of the selectmen’s decisions during the past year or so, has also taken out papers.
Frank DiConzo, a retired postal worker who sits on the SAD 43 board, has taken out nomination papers for both a seat on the school board and as a selectmen.
Should he win both seats, he must decide which board he would serve on because state law prohibits the same person from serving on both boards.
Selectman Chairman Jim Rinaldo, a retired NewPage Corp. employee, has decided not to seek a second term.
For school board, besides DiConzo, Chairwoman Linda Westleigh, a banker, has taken out papers for another three-year term. She has served the board since 2002.
David McKivergan holds the third seat to be filled this year.
He served from 2000-2003, and from 2004 to now, and has not taken out papers.
Also up for election this year is a three-year term on the Board of Assessors held by retired real estate agent Peter Perry.
He filled out the final year of a term held by Louise Horn. He has not taken out nomination papers.
Giasson said anyone wanting to run for assessor must gather the signatures of a minimum of 50 registered voters and return them to the town office by May 14.
Elections will take place by referendum ballot on June 12.
