LEWISTON – Pearl Tibbetts Sawyer, author of five published works of poetry, will read from her latest collection, “Through the Window” at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at Percy’s Burrow, Lewiston Mall, 20 East Ave.
Sawyer, 85, has lived in Auburn for more than 35 years and raised four children before that while living in Lewiston. She didn’t start writing until after she retired; and since her 80th birthday, she has written a book of poetry a year. One of her purposes for publishing her writing is to let the younger generation know that there are elderly people who are active, creative and making important contributions.
“I think it’s important for more people to become aware that the social attitude toward the elderly is way behind – being old is not bad, it’s what you make it,” Sawyer said.
Through poetry, Sawyer hopes to encourage people to really look at their surroundings to see what’s there. “So many times we go through life blindfolded,” she said.
