NEW GLOUCESTER – George Linwood Stone, 81, of New Gloucester, died Friday, March 30, at St. Marguerite d’Youville Pavilion.
He was born in East Poland on April 21, 1925, the son of Ralph W. and Josie A. Prescott Stone. He was a 1943 graduate of Edward Little High School.
He joined the U.S. Army after graduation and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was discharged in 1985 after 42 years of service in the active military and reserves.
He was employed by New England Telephone Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1976. After retirement, he worked for the state of Maine for 10 years as a park ranger at Popham Beach State Park and Range Pond State Park. He also worked as a sales manager for Long Distance Telephone Co. of Lewiston.
He was a member of the United Baptist Church of Lewiston. He worked extensively with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of America, leading a canoe trip down the Allagash.
He belonged to the Tyrian Lodge No. 73 A. F. & A. M., was life member of the VFW Post No. 1603, life member of Telephone Pioneers, and was past president of the Popham Beach Boat Owners Association.
His volunteer activities included the New Gloucester Board of Appeals, Red Cross blood drives, and work as a Sisters of Charity Life Line installer.
He enjoyed woodworking, playing the piano, fishing, hunting, flying, square dancing and traveling.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years and 10 months, Virginia; two sons, Gregory R. and wife, Lise M., of Lewiston, and George M. and wife, Terri,of Albion; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, Robert L., in 1989.
