Rumford – Joseph Roger Petrie, 78, of Knox Street, Rumford, died March 30 at home with his devoted wife by his side.

He was born in Rumford on Jan. 5, 1929, the son of Dennis and Alice (Boudreau) Petrie.

He joined the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II.

He was employed at Oxford Paper Co. until his retirement.

He was a member of the VFW Post 1641, the American Legion Post 24 and the Father Barry Knights of Columbus Council 2091, which is where he held offices of treasurer, trustee and pilot of the 4th degree.

He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and bowling. He was a member of the Monday Men’s Pine Tree Bowling League, Wednesday’s Couples League and Dot Day’s on Fridays.

He was an active communicant of St. Athanasius & St. John Catholic Church and a devoted volunteer at Thursday night bingo.

In 1948, he married Estelle (Jaros) Petrie, who predeceased him in 1986.

He was fortunate to find love again, and in 1999, he married Shirley (Bradbury) Petrie, with whom he happily shared his final years.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Bradbury) Petrie; his loving children, David Petrie and wife, Margaret, of Attleboro, Mass., Priscilla “Cilla” Prevost and husband, David, of Rumford, Wayne Petrie of Rumford, Mark Petrie and wife, Teresa, of Rumford, Gloria Provencher and husband, Terrance, of Rumford, and Gary Petrie and wife, Deanna, of Rumford; daughter-in-law, Nancy Petrie of Berlin, N.H.; three sisters, Marie Coffin and husband, Millett, Joan Cyr and husband, Al, and Sharon Sirois and husband, Rudy, all of Rumford; 17 grandchildren, Jeanette, Jane, Kristyn, Kelley, Kevin, Patrick, Tareena, Matthew, Malinda, Michael, Jason, Bryanne, Jonathan, Sydney, Kendal, Julianne and Amanda; and seven great-grandchildren, Campbell, Alexis, Jade Gavyn, Ava, Britney and Kylie.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Estelle Jaros Petrie; a son, Bernard; brothers, J. Dennis Petrie and J.R. Petrie; and a sister, Cora Wade.
