BIDDEFORD (AP) – Amtrak’s Downeaster trains were back to their normal schedule Monday after an accident a day earlier in which an ATV was struck.
The passenger train was heading north from Boston to Portland on Sunday afternoon when the conductor saw a man trying to move the all-terrain vehicle from the tracks just before the train hit it. When the train finally came to a stop, the ATV operator was gone but the four-wheeler was torn in half and thrown more than 50 feet, the Maine Warden Service said.
The train was 1 1/2 hour late getting to Portland because of the accident. No one was injured.
ATV owner William Hullczuk, 48, of Arundel, was located and cited for illegally operating an ATV on railroad tracks, WCSH-TV said.
