WESTBROOK – Truckstop Souvenir, the acoustic country/folk duo of Dennis James and Lauryn Shapter, will appear in concert Tuesday, April 3, at Chicky’s Fine Diner.
This husband-and-wife team share songwriting duties and swap vocal leads, backing each other up with harmony vocals and a battery of instruments, including guitars, fiddle, mandolin and piano. Performing mostly original compositions inspired by old school country and folk, the duo has drawn comparisons to The Carter Family and The Everly Brothers, as well as more contemporary artists such as Gillian Welch and Kris Kristofferson.
Their performances offer an intimate look into myriad characters and stories. From wistful moments to whiskey-soaked tragedy, the songs present a panorama of the human experience.
Truckstop Souvenir began playing together in January of 2003. The duo promptly built a loyal fan base and honed its sound in pubs, coffeehouses and concert venues in and around Seattle, Wash. In the summer of 2005, the two began work on their debut album, “Leave Nothing Behind,” released June 11, 2006. It was met with critical acclaim in the United States, as well as in parts of Europe, where it debuted on the Euro-Americana chart at No. 9.
In September of 2006, James and Shapter relocated to southeast Iowa and began touring the country in support of their album.
The April 3 performance will begin at 7 p.m. Chicky’s Fine Diner is at 3 Bridge St. For more information, call 854-9555 or visit www.chickysfinediner.com or www.truckstopsouvenir.com.
