FARMINGTON – Pianist Steven Pane will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 6-7 in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington campus.
“Goldberg Variations” has become one of the most important works in Western classical music. The piece is made up of a theme, played at the beginning and repeated at the end, with 30 variations written in various styles, including dances, canons, fugues, as well as movements with wild hand crossings. The emotional range spans the tragic to exuberant expressions of joy.
Three UMF students, Meghan Dzyak, Seth Fogg, and Koogsie Naranja, will provide a presentation on Bach and “Goldberg Variations” at the start and will be part of a discussion following the performance. The students are taking Dr. Pane’s course on Bach this semester and have been studying “Goldberg Variations” since January.
Proceeds will be donated to the music collection at UMF’s Mantor Library. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Mickey’s Hallmark and will also be available at the door. The cost is $7 for adults, $6 for senior citizens.
Please note, this program is not recommended for young children.
