Green tea is getting increasingly popular in the United States and it is a great thing. Green tea is a natural source of antioxidants. There is lots of research on the health benefit’s of green tea, but most are about green tea and cancer prevention. Studies found less cancer in Asian people who consume green tea on a regular basis. Scientists are trying to figure out why people who drink green tea have a lower risk of cancer and how green tea fights against cancer in the human body.

There have been hundreds of green tea studies and about 10 percent of them have involved people. These studies have shown that green tea helps fight against bladder, colon, esophageal, pancreas, rectum and stomach cancers. Green tea also can help your liver by protecting liver cells and helping the immune system. The antioxidants in green tea also protect the liver against bad things like cigarette smoke and alcohol.

Green tea contains antioxidants that can lower cholesterol, reduce risk of death from heart disease, and help with blood pressure. People who consumed more than 8.5 ounces of tea daily had significantly lower risk of dying and lower rate of heart attack than those who did not drink as much tea. Men who consumed the most antioxidants had one third less risk of dying from coronary heart disease. Antioxidants reduce blood cell clumping which decreases the risk of a blood clot and other risks before heart attacks and strokes. A Japanese study saw an average decrease of eight cholesterol levels in men who drank the most green tea. Drinking green tea can help oral health and protect against cavities. It works against cavity causing bacteria and has natural fluoride.

This can benefit Mainers because if more people drink green tea, there will be less cancer and death in Maine. It also protects against heart attacks, the number one killer in the state. If everyone in Maine drank over 8.5 ounces of green tea daily, a lot of people could live to be very old and healthy.
