FARMINGTON – Music, prayer, scripture and sunrise will highlight the services offered by local churches in observance of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ during the Easter weekend. Services in the area include the following:
Maundy Thursday services in remembrance of the Last Supper will be held Thursday, April 5, at:
Farmington: Henderson Memorial Baptist Church, 7 p.m., Communion and Tennebrae readings from the gospel of Luke follows a meditation.
Farmington: St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 7 p.m., includes the procession of oils to be used for the next year, singing of “The Gloria,” readings and foot washing.
Jay: St. Rose, 7 p.m.
Wilton: St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 7 p.m., Holy Communion.
Good Friday
Farmington: An ecumenical Good Friday service begins at noon at Old South Congregational Church that includes music and 14 stations of the cross. Area ministers participating include the Rev. Kathy Wallace, Old South; the Rev. Tim Walmer, St. Luke’s Episcopal; the Rev. Roger Chabot, St. Joseph’s; the Rev. Terrence McKinley, Trinity United Methodist; the Rev. Scott Planting, Fairbanks Union; the Rev. Susan Crane, Henderson Memorial and the Rev. Marsha Charles, Shorey Chapel. People may come and leave, as necessary, during the service.
Jay/Livermore Falls: Celebration of the walk of the cross at 1:30 p.m. starting at St. Rose Church to First Baptist, the Nazarene Church and Eaton Memorial. Sponsored by the Tri-Town Ministerial Association. All are welcome to walk with the cross.
Jay: St. Rose, 4:30 p.m., Live stations of the cross with the church’s senior high youth.
Jay: Bean’s Corner Baptist Church, 6:30 p.m., reading, music and communion.
Wilton: Ecumenical community outreach service at 7 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, reflecting the Scottish Iona service with brief prayers and meditations following the stations of the cross. Churches participating include Dryden United Baptist, St. Luke’s, Wilton Congregational and Wilton United Methodist Church.
Easter vigil, Saturday
Jay: St. Rose’s, Easter vigil at 8 p.m.
Wilton: St. Luke’s Episcopal, 8 p.m., the great vigil of Easter, held after dark Saturday and before dawn Sunday, the first service of resurrection and light, with scripture, music, baptism and Eucharist.
Sunrise services, Sunday
Farmington: Ecumenical service begins at 6:09 a.m. on Voter Hill. Following a 30-year tradition, area Christians will gather for a silent vigil, trumpet fanfare by Andrew Hardy, Molly Wheeler and Peter Roberts, scripture, music and the rising of the sun. After the service, a light breakfast is available at the home of Fred and Denise Brittain, formerly owned by Paul and Susan Taylor. Refreshments served by Henderson Memorial and Shorey Chapel members.
Livermore Falls: First Baptist and Moosehill Freewill Church sunrise services at 6:30 a.m. at Moosehill Church.
Wilton: Ecumenical service begins at 6:08 a.m. at 211 Orchard Drive, the site of the first church in Wilton, a Methodist church built in 1811, said the Rev. Douglas Dunlap. The site, beside an orchard, presents a clear view of the horizon. Service held rain or shine. A free breakfast will be offered following the service at the Wilton Congregational Church.
