WASHINGTON – Hugging, high-fiving and bouncing in unison near the mound, the Washington Nationals celebrated their first win of the season as if they were World Series champions.
Dmitri Young’s bases-loaded single with one out in the ninth completed a comeback from a five-run deficit, and the Nationals beat the Florida Marlins 7-6 Wednesday.
Young hit an arching ball toward the left-field corner, and outfielder Josh Willingham let it drop in, hoping it would land foul. But the ball fell a few inches fair, and Young raised a fist in the air as he ran to first and Kory Casto crossed the plate with the game-ending run.
Rockies 11, Diamondbacks 4
DENVER – Rodrigo Lopez allowed six hits in seven innings for his first win since last Aug. 17, and Matt Holliday backed him with four hits and four RBIs to lead the Colorado Rockies over the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-4.
Last year, Lopez led the major leagues with 18 losses and dropped his final six decisions after beating the New York Yankees on Aug. 17. Acquired from Baltimore in January for two minor league pitchers, Lopez (1-0) gave up two runs – one earned – struck out five and walked none.
Braves 3, Phillies
PHILADELPHIA – Two games. Two comeback victories for the Atlanta Braves.
Scott Thorman’s solo homer in the 11th inning led Atlanta to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night.
Brian McCann’s two-run homer off closer Tom Gordon tied it at 2 in the ninth. Thorman then connected against Ryan Madson (0-2) with one out in the 11th.
Cubs 4, Reds 1
CINCINNATI – Ted Lilly pitched seven impressive innings in his Cubs debut, leading Chicago to a 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on a snowy night.
Lilly allowed only three singles and struck out nine on a blustery night, puffing into his cupped left hand between pitches to keep the feeling in his fingertips. Lilly was a key part of the Cubs’ offseason spending spree, getting a four-year, $40 million deal.
Mark DeRosa, another of the six free agents signed in the offseason, broke the game open with a bases-loaded single in the seventh off reliever Todd Coffey. Aramis Ramirez also had three singles off loser Bronson Arroyo.
Pirates 5, Astros 4
HOUSTON – Jose Bautista drove in three runs to help the Pittsburgh Pirates erase a two-run deficit and rally for a 5-4 win over the Houston Astros.
Pittsburgh, which opened last season with three straight losses, is 3-0 for the first time since 2003 and left town with its first three-game sweep in Houston since 1991.
Mets 10, Cardinals 0
ST. LOUIS – John Maine kept the St. Louis Cardinals’ bats quiet and Carlos Beltran homered twice and drove in four runs, helping the New York Mets sweep the World Series champions with a 10-0 victory.
Jose Reyes also homered and had three RBIs for the Mets, who were 8-1 to start last season en route to an NL-high 97 wins before they were eliminated by the Cardinals in the NLCS. The season-opening series is for much lower stakes, of course, although the Mets were able to spoil a pair of World Series celebrations while outscoring the Cardinals 20-2.
Tigers 10, Blue Jays 9
DETROIT – Curtis Granderson hit his first career grand slam as Detroit built a nine-run lead in a 10-9 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Coming off its first AL pennant since 1984, Detroit lost Monday’s opener 5-3 in 10 innings. The Tigers chased A.J. Burnett (0-1) early in this one, and Granderson connected off Shaun Marcum for his first homer of the season, capping an eight-run third with a drive that landed on top of the wall in right-center and bounced over.
Granderson also had an RBI triple in the seventh off Victor Zambrano and tied his career high with five RBIs.
Todd Jones worked the ninth for his first save.
Angels 5, Rangers 3
ANAHEIM, Calif. – Ervin Santana held Texas to four hits in seven innings, Gary Matthews Jr. made another leaping catch and Los Angeles beat the Texas Rangers 5-3 for only the fourth 3-0 start in franchise history.
The Angels outscored the Rangers 17-7 and left Texas rookie manager Ron Washington looking for his first victory. The Angels hadn’t opened with a three-game sweep since 2004 at Seattle.
Twins 7, Orioles 2
MINNEAPOLIS – Ramon Ortiz allowed two runs in seven innings in his Twins debut, helping Minnesota complete a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with a 7-2 victory.
Michael Cuddyer had three singles and two RBIs before leaving with a cut on his chin in the fifth inning for the Twins, who smacked around Jaret Wright in his first start for the Orioles.
Wright lasted just 2 1-3 innings, giving up six runs — four earned – on four hits and walking five.
